A splash of support for the HIWWT
Over the past four years, Hildon have made regular donations in support of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s local Wildlife Watch clubs. To date, we have donated over £5,000 to the Wildlife Watch, this has helped bring over 653 families closer to nature.
Wildlife Watch clubs are run by dedicated, passionate volunteers who organise regular sessions for members. The clubs are open to families with children aged between five and 12 years, and aim to nurture a life-long love of nature.
The emphasis on family learning makes Wildlife Watch really special, as this empowers parents to support their children in building lasting connections to the natural world. We like to think that the children involved will go on to become the David Attenboroughs, Chris Packhams and Michela Strachans of the future.
The sessions are always practical and generally take place outside, where families can enjoy hands-on activities such as pond dipping, investigating animal tracks and signs and finding seashore treasures. By attending regular sessions, children can work through a cumulative set of awards, building up their skills and confidence.
2018 was a particularly exciting year for Wildlife Watch in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. The HIWWT’s brand new Watch Group at Eling Tide Mill got off to a flying start, and over the course of the year, 11 different groups ran 93 sessions for local children and their families.
Our support and the support of others ensures that HIWWT can plan for the future, train new Watch Leaders and supply essential kit for the groups to use. It makes us extremely proud to see how much of a difference our support has made to date.
